The glass cup or diatretum is the pinnacle of 4th century glass production. These luxurious cups are truly rare in the world; this one is the only find of this type on our territory. They have been discovered on Roman period sites in both the western and eastern parts of the Empire, and it is assumed that they were produced in two centres.
As exquisitely luxurious products, they were most probably owned only by members of high social class. Almost all of the items have inscriptions on the upper section, which most frequently proclaim: “If you drink from the cup, you will live long, happy…” It is assumed that they mainly served as cups for festive, ceremonial drinking, while it is also suggested that some of them served as candles.
